Calopogon barbatus

Range:

Habitat: terrestrial in moist, open, acidic bogs, prairies, pine woods, and roadsides
Common name: Bearded Grass Pink, Early Grass Pink
Blooming: March
Comments: this is one of the earliest orchids to appear in spring in moist, acidic bogs, preceded only by Listera australis. The flowers, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) across and ranging in color from pale pink to deep pink, open sequentially up the spike in the standard form, with two or three open flowers at once being typical. In variant multiflorus (sometimes elevated to a species in its own right), many more flowers are open simultaneously. Pollination of this flower happens in a similar fashion as Calopogon tuberosus.
